The Future of Woodworking is in the Details

Houston , Tx.-- The future of woodworking is alive and well , and in the hands of a new generation of craftsmen and one of them is in Houston, Texas - his name is Jeremy Grubb.
Jeremy is the type of person that does not shy away from a challenge and  in 1999 after leaving the USMC Jeremy worked a variety of jobs to try to make ends meet. From being a bailbondsman going to find bail jumpers in the worst neighborhoods of Houston, to doing other odd jobs - Jeremy found a job in construction. Ever restless Jeremy started to pickup many different trades within the construction business and after some time had the opportunity to take over ownership of the business himself.

After several years of running the business and getting much of his business just by word of mouth, Jeremy began to teach himself woodworking by doing projects for friends in his spare time.

Jeremy says “ I gave away a lot of stuff for free in the early going.”

While he was working during the day and doing woodworking in the evening he decided that he wanted an education and perused his college degree. All during this time his passion and creativity for woodworking was starting to build. More and more friends were telling their friends and family of the cool projects Jeremy was creating  and the orders started to build. All this during a down economy.

Once he had the construction business going and finally his BS in Physiology AND Interior Design completed he found that more and more of his business was doing furniture. Jeremy decided that he was at a crossroads - do remodels and construction or follow his dream of doing detailed handiwork and custom furniture.

The decision was clear- his love of hand-working wood in to intricate forms and organic shapes was giving him the most pleasure and orders are rolling in even today with our flat economy.
Jeremys' work has been showcased and proved what he is able to do with only a 4000 sq ft shop. According to Jeremy “I like to push the boundaries of woodworking to demonstrate to  the next generation of woodworkers what is possible. They sit a computer and never get the satisfaction of what is possible other than just ones and zeros. They (upcoming generation) need to know that there is another alternative and that doing this is a viable way of making a living.”

Jeremy’s shop consists of a lot of hand tools accumulated over the years and some Laguna Tools machines as well. He owns our 12” Platinum Series Jointer and a 20” Planer. About the 12” Platinum Series Jeremy says “ That thing cuts like butter..It does crazy cuts on the most gnarly woods and works like a dream.” The 20” Planer is also very integral as part of his shop and “it's super quiet too” says Jeremy.

A lot of Jeremys' work is very organic and detailed. Many of his future projects will tackle more detailed organic shapes and flowers like Cala Lillies and Camellia Flowers. Texas is called the Lone Star State and Jeremey is one of the rising stars in the industry today.
